The saying “Knows where the bodies are buried” entered mainstream usage supposedly because of the myth surrounding the 1963 New York Times bestseller, “The Green Felt Jungle”, the first book to expose the criminal ownership behind most of the Las Vegas Strip casino resorts. This was confirmed by Geoff Schumacher, vice president of exhibits and programs for the Las Vegas Mob Museum, who pointed to the unmarked grave in 1986 where the bodies of murdered Las Vegas mafia kingpin Tony Spilotro and his brother Michael were buried in an Indiana cornfield, not in the desert outside Las Vegas (Image: Associated Press). Rumors about Las Vegas’s mafia-ridden past may promote the idea that there are countless bodies buried out in the desert, but in reality, there are only a few. However, the widespread belief that they filled the desert with hundreds of bodies is nothing more than a myth. ![]() ![]() ![]() The fact is well-known that the mafia had a stronghold on the Las Vegas casino industry from the 1940s to the late 1970s.
